CATEGORY: Film

PROJECT DIRECTOR: Shruti Ganguly

SHIRLEY is a raw, intimate and unflinching look into the work and life of legendary activist Shirley Sherrod.

Shirley Sherrod is a legend when it comes to the work she has done for farmers in rural Georgia. But Shirley's life has been filled with its own fair share of hardship. Losing her father propelled her to dedicate her life to protecting farmers in the South. Shirley ended up being appointed by Former President Obama to work for the Department of Agriculture, and became the Georgia State Director of Rural Development. Within one year into her term, a speech she gave at the NAACP in 2010 was edited by a young blogger on the scene - Andrew Breitbart. She then got intertwined in a controversy that led to her firing, her name was eventually cleared and Obama called her directly to reconsider her position but Shirley decided to continue her work on the grassroots level. The film SHIRLEY is Shirley's story, honest and true, reflecting on her past, her future, and the need to continue the legacy of Black farmers in the rural South.
